France: the "Clothing" industry by type of commercial Site

During the 2013-2017 period, the activity "Clothing" declined from 19.62% to 16.98% of the shops listed within Codata perimeters in France. Simultaneously, the proportion of Retailers increased from 56% to 58%.

Beyond this basic tendency, the continuous monitoring developed by Codata nearly 20 ago allows to define subtler tendencies, for instance by type of commercial Site.

In this way, we registered an average representation rate of 16.98% for the "Clothing" industry in 2017. However, the distribution by type of Site is uneven:

  • 19.09% in shopping streets (including 43% of Retailers),

  • 26.27% in shopping centres (including 84% of Retailers),

  • 7.40% in retail areas (including 77% of Retailers).

Beyond this first approach, it is interesting to know the tendency site by site. Codata Explorer allows that via the page "Shops Statistics". The following chart allows to notice that, for instance, the number of apparel shops decreased from 145 to 119 between 2003 and 2018 in Metz.

With Codata Explorer, it is even possible to define the evolution of a street. Here is the example of the Rue Serpenoise in Metz.

Naturally, the next step is to compare the sites. Codata Files allows that with its history files over 10 years.

Here are some examples from the history file for the year 2017.

  • Highest rates of Clothing Shops (excluding sites of big cities):

    • Les Sables d’Olonne (44.53% - 57 Clothing shops including 18 Retailers),

Codata census method

Codata databases are updated and extended according to a proven technique that was developed 25 years ago and that is continuously improved over the years.

All the listed sites are visited by our data collectors-managers. They physically survey the commercial Sites to list and to take pictures of the retail locations.

The second phase is conducted from the office: uploaded field data is checked, compared and finally validated in the database.

At the same time, data known as "out of Codata perimeters" is the subject of a thorough study conducted from the office. "Out of Codata perimeters" locations are encoded thanks to a geopositioning system allowing the same precision as the one reached by field census. This way, we can announce that we have the exhaustive list of retail locations of more than 1,000 Retailers.

Finally, an in-house team is monitoring, continuously verifying the encoded data and completing the database with information on commercial Projects, Retailers and retail real estate Service Providers. This monitoring team, the Service Support, is in constant contact with the actors of the retail real estate industry.

All Codata databases are available online on Codata Explorer and as raw data via Codata Files.

Comparison of the leaders in the "Perfumes-Beauty-Body Care" industry in FR-BE-NL-IT

Each edition of a Codata Digest has a section dedicated to the most represented Retailers in the "Perfumes-Beauty-Body Care" industry.

Each year, we draw up the list of the Retailers that operate the most shops within Codata perimeters.

Codata Digest France 2018Codata Digest France 2018
Codata Digest Belgium 2018 Codata Digest Belgium 2018
Codata Digest The Netherlands 2017 Codata Digest The Netherlands 2017
Codata Digest Italy 2017 Codata Digest Italy 2017

Here is a comparative analysis on the following countries: France, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands.

Only 3 Retailers that operate in this sector are present in the 4 countries: Kiko, l’Occitane en Provence and Yves Rocher.

It is interesting to analyse the correlation between those four Top 50 in order to find out if the networks that monopolise these first 50 ranks are the same from one country to another.

The table highlights the great similarity of "Perfumes-Beauty-Body Care" distribution networks between Belgium and the Netherlands: the TOP 50 are more than 70% identical.

As to the other pairs of countries, it is interesting to notice that the TOP 50 are mainly different: from one country to another, the 50 most represented Retailers in the "Perfumes-Beauty-Body Care" sector are identical to 26% at the most. The pair Belgium-France is a good example.
